Many thousands of people are injured every year in various types of accidents at work in public places, road traffic, accidents at home.

An investigation is expected to get under way in Co Donegal today to determine how a vehicle with six people on board fell into the water from Buncrana pier last night.
Five people, two adults and three children, died in the accident and a young baby was rescued. The tragedy happened shortly after 7pm last night. A Northern Ireland registered large vehicle, with six people inside, slipped from Buncrana jetty into Lough Swilly. The alarm was quickly raised and emergency services as well as local boatmen rushed to the scene. A local man who jumped into the water managed to rescue a very young baby. However five people, a man and woman and three children, died. Read More

A seven-year-old boy, who was injured when his head was trapped in electric security gates, has been awarded more than €50,000 damages in the Circuit Civil Court.
Judge John Aylmer was told that Lee McCabe was four when the gates closed on his head and had to be rescued by a neighbour who had heard him crying for help. Barrister Conor Kearney, who appeared with Tony Taaffe solicitor for Lee, told the court that Circuit Court President, Mr Justice Raymond Groarke, had last year rejected a €37,000 assessment by the Personal Injuries Board.
