The Supreme Court has dismissed a challenge by a Romanian man who argued his drink driving prosecution could not proceed because he was not supplied with a breath alcohol statement in Irish as well as in English.
The five judge court's unanimous judgment has implications for an estimated 1,000 drink driving prosecutions, many of which were on hold pending its decision. Giving the Supreme Court judgment today, Ms Justice Iseult O'Malley stressed the issues to be decided did not relate to any asserted constitutional entitlement to an Irish language version of the statement relied upon to prove the breath alcohol level but rather its evidential status. University Hospital Kerry is reviewing some 46,000 scans related to more than 26,000 patients after it was notified of three delayed diagnoses among patients.
The South/ South West Hospital Group, of which the hospital is a member, confirmed it was investigating patient safety concerns after receiving notification of the three serious reportable events. It is understood that all the scans, including X-rays, cat scans and ultrasounds, relate to work carried out by one individual who is no longer working at the hospital. Read More...

Ryanair has agreed to recognise pilot unions for the first time in its 32-year history in a bid to stop its first pilot strike from taking place.
In a statement, Ryanair said it has written to the pilot unions in Ireland, the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal. It had invited each of them to talks to recognise these unions as the representative body for pilots in Ryanair in each of these countries. "Ryanair will now change its long standing policy of not recognising unions in order to avoid any threat of disruption to its customers and its flights from pilot unions during Christmas week," the statement said.
