The European Commission has concluded that Ireland broke EU state aid rules by granting undue tax benefits of up to €13 billion to US tech giant Apple, which must now be collected from the firm with interest.
At a press conference, the Commission said it had ordered Ireland to recover the unpaid taxes from Apple for the years 2003-14. The Commission can only order recovery of illegal state aid for a ten-year period preceding its first request for information in 2013. Read More Source: www.irishlegal.com

The Government is preparing for a ruling from the European Commission on Apple, which may be announced this week.
There are growing indications the Commission will rule that the technology giant received illegal state aid from Ireland. Sources say such a ruling could result in the State being obliged to collect billions of euro from Apple. Ireland has argued Apple was never granted a special tax deal by the Revenue Commissioners. The Minister for Finance Michael Noonan has already stated that Ireland would appeal any negative finding to the European Court of Justice. Read More

The High Court awarded €30,000 in general damages for injuries sustained by a cyclist as the result of a road traffic accident involving a taxi, while rejecting a majority of the cyclist’s claim for special damages.
The personal injury claim was brought by a bicycle courier against a taxi driver for damages arising as a result of the accident at Custom House Quay, Dublin in March 2015, which the court held was caused by the taxi driver’s negligence. Read More Source: www.irishlegal.com

A formal charge has been made against Irish man Kevin Mallon along with three other people for his involvement in an alleged illegal ticket selling scheme at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Dubliner Mr Mallon, an employee of sports hospitality company THG, was arrested on Friday night at a hotel in the city along with a translator, with police saying he was in possession of 813 tickets for high-profile sporting events at the Games as well as the opening and closing ceremonies. The formal charge claims that he was “arrested in the act, providing, diverting or facilitating of tickets for cambismo” – the Brazilian term for the illegal resale of tickets. French authorities investigating the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in west Cork nearly 20 years ago have issued a new European arrest warrant for suspect Ian Bailey after obtaining an indictment order to put him on trial in France.
Judge Nathalie Turquey, who took over the French investigation earlier this year from Judge Patrick Gachon, delivered an indictment order on July 27th to start a criminal case against Mr Bailey in Paris on the ground of voluntary homicide. The news that the French authorities are seeking to extradite Mr Bailey to stand trial has been warmly welcomed by Ms Toscan du Plantier’s son, Pierre-Louis Baudey-Vignaud who said it marked yet another stage in his family’s long quest for justice for his mother.
