30/8/2016

Picture
The European Commission has concluded that Ireland broke EU state aid rules by granting undue tax benefits of up to €13 billion to US tech giant Apple, which must now be collected from the firm with interest.

At a press conference, the Commission said it had ordered Ireland to recover the unpaid taxes from Apple for the years 2003-14.

The Commission can only order recovery of illegal state aid for a ten-year period preceding its first request for information in 2013. Read More

Govt Prepares for EU's Verdict on Apple Tax Case

29/8/2016

Picture
The Government is preparing for a ruling from the European Commission on Apple, which may be announced this week.

There are growing indications the Commission will rule that the technology giant received illegal state aid from Ireland.

Sources say such a ruling could result in the State being obliged to collect billions of euro from Apple.
Ireland has argued Apple was never granted a special tax deal by the Revenue Commissioners.

The Minister for Finance Michael Noonan has already stated that Ireland would appeal any negative finding to the European Court of Justice. Read More

What to do if you have been involved in an accident

25/8/2016

Picture
Many thousands of people are injured every year in various types of accidents at work in public places, road traffic, accidents at home.

If you are suffering from any type of injury either physical or psychological due to an accident caused by another party, you are more than likely entitled to compensation which may include damages for loss of earnings, medical bills and expenses.

What do I do if I have been involved in an accident?

  1. Report the accident to an appropriate person;
  2. Get details of how the accident occurred and the names of any witnesses;
  3. If you have a camera phone you should photograph any of the relevant evidence.  For example if you fall in a shop and there is a wet floor or items on the floor, you should take a photograph of it or if somebody is with you, ask them to do so.
  4. Contact John M Joy & Company Solicitors for advice without delay.
  5. If you are injured you should attend with your Doctor and if there are visible signs of injury, take photographs of those injuries.
  6. Never admit liability. Sometimes you may feel at fault for an accident but on reflection the other party may be partially or entirely at fault.
  7. Do not sign an accident report form without consulting your Solicitor.
  8. Do not complete an application to the Personal Injuries Assessment Board without consulting John M Joy & Company Solicitors.

 A formal charge has been made against Irish man Kevin Mallon along with three other people for his involvement in an alleged illegal ticket selling scheme at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

5/8/2016

French authorities investigating the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in west Cork nearly 20 years ago have issued a new European arrest warrant for suspect Ian Bailey after obtaining an indictment order to put him on trial in France.

Judge Nathalie Turquey, who took over the French investigation earlier this year from Judge Patrick Gachon, delivered an indictment order on July 27th to start a criminal case against Mr Bailey in Paris on the ground of voluntary homicide.

The news that the French authorities are seeking to extradite Mr Bailey to stand trial has been warmly welcomed by Ms Toscan du Plantier’s son, Pierre-Louis Baudey-Vignaud who said it marked yet another stage in his family’s long quest for justice for his mother. Read More
